Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital was on lockdown during “Grey’s Anatomy’s” two-hour special event on Thursday — and are Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and Ben (Jason George) about to go on lockdown, too?The couple, who wed during season nine, hit a bump in the road on “Grey’s” new episode when Ben decided to perform an emergency C-section on a pregnant mother in the hallway when he couldn’t get into the OR since the elevators were shut down during the lockdown. It was heartening to hear Bailey finally place her current situation into a larger context, something the characters (who sometimes seem like they have amnesia) don’t do all that often: She and Ben started dating, he loved her little boy, then there was the mass shooting and, in her post-traumatic shock, Bailey sent Ben packing.Just recently, Bailey resumed dating Ben again and she’s now fearful that it’ll all go kaflooey, like her marriage did when she had been complacent believing that her life was great and perfect, just like she did before a gunman went on a rampage through the halls of Seattle Grace. He is now a 34-year-old father of two living in Dalston, north-east London, with his wife, who teaches part-time.Over the past decade he has dabbled in music, acting, writing and, more recently, stand-up comedy.
Ben Bailey Smith, younger brother of the novelist Zadie Smith, regularly visits his mother in north-west London.
Finally, a ball has been set rolling, and if Ricky Gervais has anything to do with it, he is at last poised to have his moment in the sun."Ricky watched my stuff on You Tube a while back and loved it," he says. I was in my garden at the time, and I just told myself: stay calm, stay calm, and whatever he says to you, say yes." Gervais suggested they work together. He has supported him on tour and tonight appears in Derek, the comedian's new sitcom on Channel 4."I'm in a purple patch right now," he beams. It's been a long time coming."Ben Bailey Smith, the middle child of three, was born to an English father and a Jamaican mother in Willesden.
His father worked in direct-mail advertising, his mother was a social worker, but both Zadie and Ben (and their younger brother Luke, a rapper) were raised with the mindset that anything was possible, and that all three were capable of anything.
What was your reaction to having so much time dedicated to you in this episode?
I love doing “Grey’s.” It’s rare that you get to play really great detailed stuff with comedy and interpersonal stuff and drama — having that all interspersed is pretty rare. That’s a good question — define “stay together” .
